Navigating the world of eczema can be tricky!
Navigating the world of eczema can be tricky!

As a paediatrician, I've walked alongside many families navigating the challenges of childhood eczema. It's a journey filled with questions, concerns, and the quest for comfort for your little one. Let's explore this condition together, shedding light on its nature and how we can manage it effectively.

What Is Childhood Eczema?

Childhood eczema, medically known as atopic dermatitis, is a common skin condition affecting up to 30% of children worldwide. It often begins in infancy and can manifest as dry, itchy, and inflamed patches on the skin. While it can be persistent, many children see improvements as they grow older. PMC

Why Does Eczema Occur?

Eczema arises from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Children with a family history of allergies, asthma, or eczema are more susceptible. Environmental triggers like allergens, irritants, and even climate can exacerbate the condition. Additionally, a compromised skin barrier allows moisture to escape and irritants to enter, leading to inflammation. BioMed Central

The Impact on Families

Beyond the physical discomfort, eczema can affect a child's sleep, mood, and overall quality of life. Parents often experience stress and concern, striving to alleviate their child's discomfort. It's essential to recognize and address these emotional aspects, ensuring support for both the child and the family. ResearchGate

Busting Common Myths About Childhood Eczema

As parents, it’s natural to turn to advice from friends, family, or the internet—but when it comes to eczema, there are a few common misconceptions I often hear in the clinic:

  1. "It’s just dry skin — it’ll go away with lotion." While moisturising is a key part of treatment, eczema isn’t just dry skin. It’s a chronic inflammatory condition that often requires a tailored care plan, especially during flare-ups.

  2. "Kids get eczema because they’re not clean enough." Not true at all. Eczema is not caused by poor hygiene. In fact, frequent washing with harsh soaps can actually worsen symptoms. Gentle care is the way to go.

  3. "My child will have eczema forever." Take heart—many children do outgrow eczema or experience milder symptoms as they get older. With proper management, long-term outcomes are very positive.

  4. "Using steroid creams is dangerous." Topical corticosteroids, when used correctly and under medical guidance, are safe and effective. The key is using the right strength, for the right duration. Always follow your doctor’s advice.

  5. "Eczema is contagious." Nope—eczema isn't something you can "catch" or pass on to others. It’s a condition that comes from within, not from contact.

Managing Eczema: Steps Toward Relief

  1. Moisturise Regularly: Keeping the skin hydrated is crucial. Apply fragrance-free moisturisers multiple times a day, especially after bathing.

  2. Identify and Avoid Triggers: Common triggers include certain fabrics, soaps, sweat, dust, and even weather changes. Keeping a “flare-up diary” can help track patterns and avoid known irritants.

  3. Gentle Bathing Practices: Use lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free cleansers. Avoid bubble baths and long soaks—limit bath time to around 10 minutes, then moisturise immediately after.

  4. Medications When Necessary: Topical corticosteroids or other prescribed treatments can reduce inflammation and provide relief. Used under a doctor’s supervision, they are safe and effective—even for long-term conditions like eczema. jpedhc.org

  5. Maintain a Supportive Environment: Ensure your child feels understood. Talk to siblings and caregivers about what eczema is—and what it isn’t (it’s not contagious!).  Emotional support is just as important as physical care. PMC

  6. Plan for School or DaycareFlare-ups can happen anytime, especially in warm, active environments like school or daycare. Here are some proactive tips:

    • Send a small “eczema kit” with moisturiser, wipes, and an extra outfit in case of sweat or spills.

    • Brief teachers or carers with a short care note—let them know it’s okay to moisturise if needed and to watch for excessive scratching.

    • Dress your child in soft, breathable cotton and avoid wool or synthetic fabrics.

    • Teach your child simple self-care habits, like applying cream to itchy spots or telling a grown-up when they’re uncomfortable.

    • Reassure your child emotionally—help them feel confident in answering questions from classmates. JMIR

With a little planning, your child can stay comfortable and happy throughout their day—no matter where they are.

While eczema can be challenging, many children experience significant improvement over time. Ongoing research continues to shed light on effective treatments and management strategies. With patience, care, and support, children with eczema can lead comfortable and joyful lives.
